A physician and educator, Dr. Harris has more than 10 years of clinical experience in her areas of expertise. Following a sabbatic leave from 2014 to 2015, she resigned from her career in order to care for her prematurely born daughter. She formerly served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and the Section of Neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine, a position she held since 2006. Alongside her primary endeavors, she was an Extracorporeal Life Support Clinician Specialist from 2010 to 2012 and a Master Teacher Graduate of the Educational Scholars Fellowship Program in 2011.
In preparation for her career, Dr. Harris graduated cum laude from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa the year of her graduation. Becoming fascinated with the medical field while observing cardiothoracic surgery, she obtained a Doctor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center in 2000. She held an internship and residency in the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine from 2000 to 2003, later completing a post-graduate fellowship in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine from 2003 to 2006, also at Baylor College of Medicine.
Board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics, the Sub-Board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, and Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Dr. Harris was an invited reviewer for the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine from 2014 to 2015. In addition, she maintains affiliation with several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics as a Fellow since 2007 and the Texas Pediatric Society, where she served as the Chair of the Palliative Care Committee on the Committee on Fetus and Newborn from 2010 to 2014.
In addition to her work in the medical field, Dr. Harris contributed her time and compassion to her local community, serving in numerous capacities to empower and educate young minds throughout the State of Texas. She was involved in numerous community outreach programs such as the St. John’s High School Medical Mentorship Program from 2007 to 2011, the Texas Children’s Hospital High School Medical Mentorship Program from 2011 to 2014, and the Summer Research Training Program (SMART Program) as a clinical mentor from 2011 to 2014. Currently, Dr. Harris works with Astronaut Dr. Leroy Chiao, Ph.D. and Ms. Jami Sunkel, the President of OneOrbit, an organization designed to bring S.T.E.A.M. and character-based education to local schools. She is also a Lifetime Palladium Member of Ambassadors for Texas Children’s Hospital, and is a member of the Founder’s Circle of the Sophia Smith Leadership Society for her ongoing yearly support of a Poetry Center internship created in her daughter’s name. She and her husband also underwrite a competitive scholarship for premedical students at the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. The University of Dallas is her husband’s alma mater and the scholarship is designed to offset travel and interviewing costs for medical school for qualifying students.
In recognition of her academic and community undertakings, Dr. Harris has been honored with numerous accolades throughout her career. She was the recipient of the American Academy of Pediatrics Special Achievement Award in 2015 and the Texas Pediatric Society Board Award in 2013, both given for her work in creating a Perinatal Palliative Care and End-of-Life Web-Based Toolkit in 2014 to assist pediatricians and neonatologists across the State of Texas in caring for chronically ill and dying infants. The daughter of Charles Thomas and Laurie Lindemulder Harris, Dr. Harris has been married to Dr. Edward Gumapac Baptista since 2009, with whom she shares one child, Eleanor Rose. Dr. Harris has an interest in genealogy and has discovered she is a direct descendant of William Bradford, a pilgrim who emigrated aboard the Mayflower, was governor of Plymouth Colony for over 30 years, and author of “Of Plymouth Plantation,” a historical journal and one of the only surviving documents detailing the founding of Plymouth Colony. Dr. Harris is currently working with the New England Historic Genealogical Society to establish herself as a member of the Mayflower Society and a Daughter of the American Revolution. She is also writing a fictional novel and plans to return to medicine in the future.
