NEW YORK, Sept. 26, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — The City of Paterson, New Jersey (“Paterson“) has retained international class action law firm Scott+Scott, Attorneys at Law, LLP (“Scott+Scott”) to represent it in litigation against pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors whose culpable conduct has proximately caused and fueled the opioid epidemic.  Paterson has thereby joined the ranks of dozens of governmental entities suing companies over the marketing of opioid painkillers that greatly downplayed the addictive risks of opioids while overstating the treatment benefits.

Paterson, like many other communities throughout New Jersey and the country, has been hit hard by the opioid epidemic.  Through its impending lawsuit, Paterson seeks to recoup the crippling cost that opioid addiction has caused the local government.  It has strained social service and human service budgets, and required substantial increases to the budgets of police, fire and other first responders to protect public safety.

Scott+Scott is headquartered in Connecticut, with additional offices in New York, Ohio, California and London, England, and is one of the nation’s premier law firms, recovering billions of dollars for its clients in securities fraud, antitrust/competition and consumer fraud litigation.  Scott+Scott has enlisted the support of the Goldsmith & Goldsmith law firm, which is a highly regarded medical malpractice law firm, headed by Lee Goldsmith, a physician and lawyer, who was part of the team representing the State of New Jersey in the 1998 tobacco litigation.  Goldsmith & Goldsmith is of counsel to the long-established and well-respected firm Cohn, Lifland, Pearlman, Herrmann & Knopf LLP.  The complex litigation expertise, financial resources, and technological capabilities of Scott+Scott, combined with the medical and legal knowledge and close familiarity with New Jersey courts of Goldsmith & Goldsmith and Cohn, Lifland, will deliver to Paterson legal services of the scope and volume that this important litigation against pharmaceutical conglomerates requires.

“The retainer agreement with Scott+Scott entitles the firm to fees only if the City wins or settles this litigation,” said Paterson Corporation Counsel Domenick Stampone.  “So this lawsuit can only inure to the benefit of Paterson and will not cost Paterson taxpayers anything.”
