PhRMA hires 2 more lobbying firms

With David Beavers and Garrett Ross

PHRMA ADDS TWO: The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America has added two more outside lobbying firms: FTI Government Affairs and the S-3 Group. John Whitcomb of FTI will lobby on Latin American trade policy for PhRMA, while John Scofield, Rob Collins and Arjun Mody of S-3 will lobby on broader legislative issues, according to disclosure filings. PhRMA is one of K Street’s biggest lobbying spenders, shelling out $25.4 million last year, and retains dozens of outside firms.

MORE NEW BUSINESS: The deluge of filings ahead of Friday’s deadline continues, and here’s what caught our eye in today’s crop of registrations. Josh Holly’s new firm, Holly Strategies, has added a couple of notable clients: Lockheed Martin and Michelin. And Honeywell has added the Alpine Group to its squadron of outside lobbying firms. Alpine’s Rhod Shaw, a former chief of staff to Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), and Mike Henry will lobby on fuel-economy regulations, according to a disclosure filing. Honeywell is a big lobbying spender: The conglomerate spent $5.6 million on lobbying last year and retains several other Washington lobbying firms.

FLYING IN: The Recording Academy is in town today for its annual “GRAMMYs on the Hill” day. Musicians will be pressing members to support the Music Modernization Act of 2018, meeting with House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Reps. Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Joe Crowley (D-N.Y.) and Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), and Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa).

— Parent advocates are on the Hill, too, calling on Congress to improve child care quality as part of the Child Care Aware of America symposium. Among the lawmakers they’ll meet with: Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas).

RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION RESPONDS TO LEAKED POLLING: The National Restaurant Association has responded to a report in The Intercept on Tuesday night on polling the trade group commissioned that “found that the industry’s various talking points against raising the wage are mostly falling flat with the general public.” (The association did not respond to a request for comment for The Intercept’s story.) “The public opinion research confirmed our ongoing efforts to find a solution that balances the needs of customers, employees, and business owners,” the association said in a statement to PI. “When it comes to minimum wage, there is not a one size fits all policy. What works in New York City could be drastically different than what works in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The research addressed a range of employment issues, including immigration reform and second-chance employment for non-violent, first time offenders.”

MORE TARIFF RESISTANCE: “Small and medium-size U.S. manufacturers hurt by President Donald Trump’s new tariffs on steel and aluminum announced a new coalition Wednesday aimed at killing the measures,” POLITICO’s Doug Palmer reports. “Trump‘s decision to impose the tariffs ‘really cuts us off at the knees,’ Troy Roberts, CEO of Qualtek Manufacturing in Colorado Springs, Colo., said at a press conference. ‘It goes way beyond the benefits that we got from the tax reform and the regulatory reform.’” Full story.
